About Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon is a TV channel for kids that first appeared in 1979, making it America’s first-ever cable TV channel entirely dedicated to cartoons and programs for children and teens. Initially, Nickelodeon mainly imported cartoon series from abroad, but from the early 90s on, the channel started collaborating with various animation studios to create their own shows. A number of these went on to become 90s classics, like Rugrats, Doug, Rocko’s Modern Life, and the somewhat controversial The Ren and Stimpy Show. More recent series include Danny Phantom, Winx Club, Avatar: The Last Airbender and the sequel The Legend of Korra. Nickelodeon also has a number of sister channels, including Nick Jr., Nicktoons, and TeenNick.
What does Nickelodeon mean?
The channel’s name, Nickelodeon, comes from the name of early 20th century movie theatres where you could watch short films and songs accompanied by illustrations. These ‘nickelodeons’ where named for the entry price of a nickel, and for the famous and luxurious Parisian theatre the Odéon. The original nickel theatres weren’t at all as comfortable and nice as the Odéon though. They were often dingy, poorly ventilated, and the wooden seats were hard and uncomfortable. But these nickelodeons were the beginning of modern cinema theatres!
