Dragon Ball series
The anime Dragon Ball Z is based on the manga series Dragon Ball by the artist Akira Toriyama. The tv-adaptation of the series is split into two halves. The first half deals with the protagonist Goku’s childhood years, from the time he joins Bulma’s quest to find the wish-granting Dragonball gems to his final showdown with Piccolo at the World Tournament of Power martial arts competition. The second half of the series was more famous in Europe and the U.S., and was released separately under the title Dragon Ball Z. The series picks up a few years later, when Goku is an adult and a new cast of (frequently extra-terrestrial) supervillains threatens the existence of the earth. This series also introduces some of the franchise’s most popular and memorable characters, such as Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Freeza, and the Saiyan prince Vegeta.
Dragon Ball spin-offs: Over 9000!
The Dragon Ball manga originally ran from 1984 to 1995, with the Dragon Ball anime first airing in Japan in 1986. Dragon Ball Z made its Japanese TV debut in 1989, and premiered in the U.S. in 1996 – the same year the animated series reached its conclusion in Japan. The series was so immensely popular that it spawned a great number of spin-offs including Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super, many animated film releases, and a long list of licenced video games. Dragon Ball also inspired a number of notorious internet memes, such as Vegeta’s badly lip-synced and mistranslated outburst at reading Goku’s power-level: “It’s over 9000!”. Whether or not you’ve seen the original series, you’ve likely seen the accompanying image of Vegeta crushing his scouter device, and you probably even know exactly how to shout the words.
